NSG 328 - Understanding Dietary Supplements in Healthcare

3 credits ( 3 didactic credits )

Description:

Supplement use in the U.S. has steadily increased with over half of Americans now taking dietary supplements. With supplement use so pervasive, the health professional needs to have a good understanding of dietary supplements when treating patients across the lifespan. Claims on dietary supplements along with testimonials can also influence practitioners to prescribe supplements. Dietary supplements just like any other drug should be prescribed based on the best scientific evidence available. This course provides the health professional with the use, evidence, and adverse effects of the most commonly used dietary supplements as well as how to manage a clinical encounter with a patient taking supplements. The information provided in this course will assist the practitioner in making sound decisions when assessing or prescribing dietary supplements. This course is intended for physicians, nurses, registered dietitians and other allied health professionals.
