Aid Overview
Funds are awarded on a competitive basis. Stipend and tuition support may be available competitively through an institutional National Research Service Award for students interested in the area of high-risk children and youth. Tuition scholarships for up to 60 credits of doctoral coursework may be available for full-time MS and PhD students. Extremely well-qualified MS and PhD students may be considered for University level fellowships if application materials are complete by February 1. Modest School of Nursing stipend support may be available for some MS and PhD students. Each year one outstanding incoming student is awarded the Loretta C. Ford Fellowship for doctoral study. Through the Center for Research and Evidence-Based Practice, students are assisted in seeking external funding such as the individual National Research Service Award. Research and teaching assistantships in the School of Nursing may be a source of financial support. Currently, no financial aid is available through the School of Nursing for part-time students, though employees of Strong Memorial Hospital may use their tuition benefit program to support part-time study. Financial assistance may be available for full-time MS and PhD study through the Advanced Education Nurse Traineeship (AEN-master's courses).
Tuition Awards
The School of Nursing PhD program is a minimum of 90 credits in length. Thirty credits usually are transferred in from the student's master's degree program. Depending on program resources, for full-time students, the School provides full tuition awards for up to 60 credits at the current rate assessed by a majority of the University's schools. However, tuition awards cannot be guaranteed.
Employer-Sponsored Tuition Benefits and Waivers
Many hospitals/medical facilities offer a variety of educational benefits to nurses. Please check with the Human Resources office at your place of employment for information on their policies.
Forms requiring a signature from a School official confirming student status, enrollment dates, etc., should be brought to the Registrar’s Office (HWH 1-126) for signature. The Registrar forwards the completed form to the appropriate institution.
If you’re an employee (or spouse or dependent child of an employee) of the University of Rochester or any of its divisions or departments, check their Tuition Benefits for Employees website for in-depth information about eligibility and policies.
Scholarships, Grants and Fellowships
Scholarship/Grant/Fellowship |
Award Amount |
GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) |
Up to $30,000/year |
The GAANN Nursing Scholars award is based on financial need and academic promise. It includes a stipend of up to $30K/year for those who qualify for that level based on financial need. The review process will favor students early in their academic program, but any may apply. You must be US citizens or permanent residents, not be receiving other federal funding (i.e., individual NRSA), and able to meet the grant targets of proposal defense by 3.5 years from entry (4.5 for MS-PhD) and graduation by 5 years (6 for MS-PhD). Because it is designed to prepare faculty, in addition to the standard curriculum, recipients will take a course on course design (an adaptation of NUR417) and attend a weekly seminar during a year of TA work before completion of the program. This would mean additional TA work if a continuing student has already completed the required hours. The adapted course and accompanying seminar will not be available until Fall 2007. GAANN application, instructions, and the standard university financial aid application with its instructions, are due June 1, 2006. Read the eligibility requirements carefully and complete all parts of both applications. All personal information will be kept confidential. Contact the Office of Student Affairs. Send an email (sonadmissions@urmc.rochester.edu) or call (585-275-2375) for an application. |

School/University Fellowships
- Loretta C. Ford Fellowship. The Loretta C. Ford Fellowship was established in 1987 in honor of the School's first dean, Loretta C. Ford, RN, EdD, FAAN. Dean Emeritus Ford is internationally renown as a practitioner, teacher, and scholar. She is the co-creator, with Henry Silver, MD, of the nurse practitioner role. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Gustav O. Lienhard award from the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences. The fellowship is awarded each year at Convocation to a full-time student entering the PhD. program in nursing who demonstrates the highest potential for academic and professional success. The award is renewed for one additional year on evidence of progress consistent with the expectations on appointment.
- Other University Fellowships. Entering doctoral students in the School of Nursing may be eligible for University-wide fellowships for doctoral students. Eligibility is determined by the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in consultation with the Doctoral Subcommittee. The Coordinator applies on behalf of eligible students directly to the University Dean for Graduate Studies.
School Stipends
Depending on student need and School of Nursing resources, stipends supported by the School of Nursing may be available for the first and second years for full-time doctoral students (distributed twice a month, September through May). These will be verified by letter to the students. If checks are direct deposited, pay stubs will be put in students' mailboxes.
Research Assistantships
Assistantship opportunities for additional compensation may be available through the research grants of individual faculty (RA) or from School of Nursing funds (TA).
National Research Service Awards
All students who anticipate full-time study and are US citizens are expected to apply for an Individual Pre-doctoral National Research Service Award (NRSA) through the National Institutes of Health. An orientation session for potential applicants and their sponsors is held by the Center for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice staff as needed to review the process and timelines for preparing the NRSA application. The Center also provides support for preparation and submission of the NRSA application.
Currently, the School of Nursing is the recipient of an institutional National Research Service Award to support training of doctoral and post-doctoral students whose research interests fall under the domain of concerns related to high-risk children and youth. Annually, the program director, Dr. Harriet Kitzman, in consultation with the Director of the Research Center for High-Risk Children and Youth, the Coordinator of the PhD program, and the Director of the Center for Research and Evidence-based Practice selects appropriate students to receive tuition and stipend support under this mechanism.
