Bio

From his early nursing career with the Monroe County Department of Public Health, Nelson has emerged as a global leader in research on HIV/AIDS. He has carved a niche with path-breaking, internationally-funded research advancing network-based approaches (social networks, health care networks and network physiology) to reducing disparities in HIV and STIs among socially marginalized groups in Ghana, Canada, and the United States.

The strength of Nelson's research extends beyond the quantitative data he brings to light, to careful consideration and integration of the complex biomedical, behavioral, social, and structural factors that influence individual health choices and outcomes. Nelson has led more than a dozen peer-reviewed research projects and has presented his findings before national policymakers and at professional workshops and conferences around the world.

Following a stint as assistant dean for global and community affairs at the University of South Florida's College of Nursing, Nelson returned to Rochester in 2014, joining a rich and collaborative research team focused on advancing HIV/AIDS prevention around the world. In 2011 the Government of Canada recognized him as a rising star in global health and in 2015 he was named the School of Nursing's Most Outstanding New Investigator. In 2016, he was selected as the inaugural OHTN Research Chair in HIV Program Science with African, Caribbean, and Black Communities, which is based at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Rochester.

Current Focus

"My current research focuses on investigating the use of new and emerging technologies as innovative approaches for supporting the implementation of combination (biomedical, behavioral, health system) interventions to prevent HIV infection among groups that are epidemiologically at high-risk for infection and whose prevention needs are complicated by their socially marginalized statuses in their communities.

“It focuses on leveraging smartphone technology to improve HIV care linkage, retention and outcomes.”

It also focuses on leveraging smartphone technology to improve HIV care linkage, retention and outcomes through investigating its use for implementing interventions delivered via platforms that better respond to community-identified issues that threaten to undermine HIV care engagement and clinical outcomes.

This general research focus is aligned with my clinical expertise as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner, my research expertise working with African, Caribbean, and Black people across the spectra of age, gender, sexual identity, and geopolitical context, and my orientation towards interdisciplinary, community-engaged approaches to research."
