Bio

Robert Cole's accomplished 40-year research career has followed two broad themes: the long-term impact of nurse home visitation for poor, first-time mothers and the factors that lead to medically attended unintentional injuries among young children.

Cole has served as a co-investigator for research funded by national organizations, including the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which explored the long-term effects of nurse home visitation. His team's findings, which have been published in JAMA Pediatrics - the highest-ranking pediatric journal in the world - have had a significant impact on individual care and health care policy.

As an outgrowth of that work, and a longstanding partnership with local and national fire protection organizations, Cole has developed an interest in the role of the environment, children's temperament, and parents' socialization strategies on the frequency of unintentional injuries. He is focused on whether certain parenting approaches help children self-regulate their behavior, protecting them from injury in the absence of direct supervision. Most recently, Cole has expanded his work to include how children's level of cognitive development can lead them to unexpected outcomes and leave them vulnerable to injuries.
