Cognate Courses

Cognate courses are elective courses chosen with the assistance of the advisor that individually and collectively enhance the depth of understanding of the student's chosen research area. These courses may be chosen from among those carrying doctoral credit anywhere in the University. For courses offered by University of Rochester departments consult the 2008-2010 Graduate Studies Bulletin.

Most cognates are taken after completion of the first year of course work when a student's chosen research area has become more clearly defined. A minimum of 12 credits of cognates is required; however, depending on a student's background, adequate preparation may require additional cognates to conduct a dissertation in the student's chosen area.  An appropriate cognate may also be taken at Syracuse University or Cornell University through the University's Exchange Scholar Program if an equivalent course is not available at the University of Rochester.
