International Applicants
Who is Considered an International Applicant?
Verification of Financial Support
International students have always been welcome members of our vibrant and diverse student population. We believe that a blend of perspectives, talents, experience, and ideas helps our community flourish and grow.
In addition to the information below, support services and resources to assist international applicants and enrolled students are provided through the University of Rochester International Services Office.
Who is Considered an International Applicant?
International applicants are individuals who need a visa in order to study or live in the United States. Individuals who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, no matter where in the world they live or go to school, are not considered international applicants.
English Language Requirement
An official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language for International Students) score is required.
- The official score must be sent from the testing agency. Faxes and copies of scores are not acceptable.
- Preferred minimum scores are as follows: >560 for paper-based test, >230 for computer-based test, or >88 for the new “i-based” test.
Applicants are urged to take the TOEFL exam well before the School of Nursing program application deadline to ensure that the scores arrive on time in the Admissions Office. They may also retake the TOEFL and submit subsequent test scores.
Achieving the minimum score is not a guarantee of admission.

Verification of Financial Support
We strongly recommend that each student secure financing prior to submitting the application for admission. We recommend that international candidates identify personal or external funding options while simultaneously pursuing admission to the program, as the process often takes longer than expected. Students must provide official bank documents or a letter of financial sponsorship that shows support for at least the first full year of tuition and living expenses.
