A Community of Adult, Lifelong Learners
The average age of our students is 28. Some are in their 50s. They are pursuing degree programs to prepare themselves to be generalists or highly specialized health care professionals. They all come to us with a prior degree—either a bachelor’s in a field unrelated to nursing or with an R.N. degree. They bring with them a breadth of life experiences that they’re happy to share with others. Others come to Edvantage to complete prerequisites to get into nursing school or to update their knowledge and skills with cutting-edge individual courses or certificate programs.
“Practitioners Who Teach” and “Researchers Who Teach”
Most of our nursing faculty spend 40 percent of their time actively working within Strong Health’s clinical care arena or conducting clinical research. Their experiences with patients inform and energize their classrooms, as “real-life” anecdotes supplement textbook teaching. Their many specialities include:

Community Health Care Activists
The School of Nursing has a longstanding commitment to community health. We work with community partners to identify, plan and provide much needed research, education and service. Our research programs address risk factors and barriers that lead to health problems, disparities in care, management of chronic conditions and quality of life. The School’s Center for Nursing Entrepenuership actively promotes services that make the Rochester area a healthier place to live from flu clinics to community wellness programs to services for employers. The former Dean of the School of Nursing, Patricia Chiverton, R.N., Ph.D., chairs the Community Health Executive Committee of the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Entrepreneurs
Entreprenuerial concepts have been woven throughout our curriculum for several years. And, our first-of-its-kind Center for Nursing Entreprenueurship teaches business strategy to nurses, helping them to learn how to bring services to a wider population outside traditional health care settings while providing new opportunities for themselves. The Center inspires innovation and supports it with expertise and funding.
Philanthropists
Our alumni and friends are amazingly active and generous. They are part of our extended family and take great interest and pride in everything we do. They attend the functions that mark our major milestones, help us provide scholarships for promising students, establish endowed chairs to help us attract talented faculty and, most recently, gave of themselves in many ways to help us realize our dream of a new, state-of-the art Education Wing.
Citizens of the World
Our Center for Lifelong Learning offers a unique online course in Global Nursing and International Health Systems Analysis designed to prepare nurses for global public health practice. We welcome international scholars who wish to study here. But, perhaps most importantly, we actively seek and forge partnerships for global initiatives. Since 2000, we have been active in partnerships with Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Honduras, China and Ireland. We are currently developing a proposal on ways to help Saudi Arabia develop their nursing workforce.

The University of Rochester, founded in 1850, is a private, coeducational institution that ranks among the most highly regarded universities in the country. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, Rochester offers degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. The University of Rochester consistently ranks among the top 30 institutions, both public and private, in federal funding for research and development.
University of Rochester Medical Center
The University of Rochester Medical Center faculty consists of approximately 1,300 full-time faculty members and 1,100 voluntary clinical faculty members organized into 32 departments and centers. The research portfolio has great depth and breadth and has achieved top-15 rankings in NIH funding in neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, oral biology, biostatistics, neurosurgery, public health and preventive medicine, and musculoskeletal research.
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
U.S. News & World Report ranks the School of Medicine and Dentistry 30th for research and 17th best in the primary care schools category. The dental programs are consistently ranked in the top 10. NIH funding to the School of Medicine and Dentistry exceeds $140 million, ranking it 30th among the nation's medical schools.
Strong Health
The Strong Health network is an integrated health care delivery system that includes hospitals; nursing homes; the visiting nurse home care; primary care, geriatric, and mental health services; all levels of medical, nursing, and biomedical education.
