I knew I would receive a well-rounded education and work with people who are really invested in my education here. The faculty are knowledgeable and have been in the hospital setting. They've been where I've been, and are doing what I want to do.

Transform your nursing career

Today, our nurse practitioner programs are ranked top in the country by U.S. News & World Report. We set the standard for nurse practitioners specializing in fields such as gerontology, pediatrics, and mental health. We were also first in the country to prepare advanced practice nurses as NPs in the acute care setting. It is this continued commitment to nursing excellence that prepares our graduates to provide the best care for patients and take the next step in their careers.

I’ve seen what it looks like when you pour into the community you’re from. This motivated me to want to become a nurse practitioner. I wanted to be in a position where I could educate myself, learn, grow, and be able to provide the care and treatment that patients need.

A proud history. An exciting future.

The University of Rochester School of Nursing's founding dean, Dr. Loretta Ford, co-founded the nurse practitioner role more than 50 years ago, paving the way for advanced nursing education, changing the face of the nursing profession, and bringing greater respect and appreciation for the role of nurses and nurse practitioners. Ever since, UR nurses have paved the way for generations of nurses to follow.

Today, the School continues its long tradition of anticipating and addressing emerging needs in healthcare. Looking ahead, we are proud to launch our redesigned Nurse Practitioner curriculum, effective January 2025. Updated specialty curriculum will reflect evolving national standards, offer more flexible learning formats for working nurses, and utilize the state-of-the-art simulation and skills lab spaces at Helen Wood Hall to strengthen students' clinical competencies and connections with faculty and peers.

This is the type of specialty where the patients become family. I meet families who are expecting babies and see abnormalities on the ultrasound. I provide that initial contact and reassurance that no matter what their child is born with, we are going to be able to take care of them, they are in great hands, and we know how to handle it. I have the most fulfilling, amazing job in the world.
