Bio

For more than two decades, James McMahon has conducted community-based, public health research in low-income underserved neighborhoods in urban areas. His work centers on the confluence of behavioral, social, and epidemiological factors that contribute to the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C in marginalized populations, with an emphasis on the implementation of biomedical interventions for disease prevention in social and community context.

The scope of McMahon’s research—often involving scientists from across the country—has made him one of the top HIV/AIDS investigators in the nation working to tackle the disease collaboratively from multiple research fronts: from basic behavioral and epidemiological science to randomized trials of prevention interventions. His research and expertise are reflected in three ongoing lines of investigation:

  1. the development of public health programs designed to prevent the spread of HIV among minority women and heterosexual couples, with a focus on HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP),
  2. understanding how the Hepatitis C virus is spread among noninjecting drug-users, and
  3. the advancement of research design and biostatistical methods applied to epidemiology.

McMahon’s most recent NIH-funded studies explore optimal implementation strategies to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission among women and heterosexual couples of mixed HIV status through preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

McMahon is co-founder of the Interdisciplinary Sexual Health and HIV Research group at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. He also has a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Public Health Science, School of Medicine and Dentistry. He serves as co-director of the Equity-Focused Implementation and Dissemination Science function of the university's Clinical and Translational Science Center. McMahon teaches applied statistics and research design in the PhD program in the School of Nursing. He earned his bachelor’s from the University of Winnipeg, Canada, and his PhD from the City University of New York.
