Bio
Joyce Smith came to the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 2005 as a graduate student in the MS-PhD program. During her PhD program, she received a SPICE (Supporting Providers in Comparative Effectiveness) Fellowship and received the Rochester Academy of Medicine Community and Preventive Medicine Award in Honor of Dr. Robert L. Berg for her original paper entitled "Lead Poisoning in Children: Still an Issue?"
Prior to her career in nursing, Joyce attained a bachelor's in biology and psychology and a master's degree in computer science. She worked in biomedical research for 25 years, initially at the Kennedy-Krieger Institute where she was involved with researching lead poisoning in children, then at the University of MD Shock Trauma Center where she worked researching hypovolemic shock and sepsis. She then went to the New Jersey Trauma Center, where she studied motor vehicle crash injuries.
Upon completing her PhD in 2013, Smith joined the faculty at the School of Nursing and uses her basic science, nursing, and computer skills to support other nurse researchers. Her expertise lies in research using existing data, large data sets, SAS statistical programming, and medical claims analysis.
