Bio

Salah Al-Zaiti, PhD, RN, CRNP, ANP-BC, FAHA, a distinguished cardiovascular nursing researcher, continues to push the boundaries of healthcare research and innovation as the Independence Foundation Chair in Cardiovascular Nursing and a professor of nursing, cardiology, and electrical and computer engineering at the University of Rochester. With 18 years of experience as a clinician, scientist, innovator, and entrepreneur, Al-Zaiti’s work uniquely bridges multiple disciplines at the intersection of healthcare and advanced technology.

His research spans clinical research, biomedical signal processing, biomarkers, genomics, healthcare informatics, clinical decision support, machine learning, human computer interaction, and AI bias and fairness. Through a highly productive research program, Al-Zaiti has secured over $8 million in funding since 2013 and leads two NIH-funded multisite clinical trials focused on developing and deploying AI-enabled clinical decision support tools at the bedside.

Al-Zaiti's work has been widely disseminated through more than 250 publications and scientific presentations, including Nature Medicine and Circulation. Recently, he led a national research collaboration creating a machine learning tool to better classify chest pain and identify hidden heart attacks, earning the 2024 Research Article of the Year Award from the American Heart Association's Council on Cardiovascular & Stroke Nursing.

He is actively involved in professional leadership, serving on leadership committees of multiple societies, including the American Heart Association. His academic contributions extend to editorial roles, including his current position as editor-in-chief of Heart & Lung, where he previously served as an executive editor for the Journal of Electrocardiology. Nevertheless, he is a standing panel member on Clinical Data Management and Analysis (CDMA) Study Section at the National Institute of Health (NIH).
