Bio

As a passionate and creative early-stage researcher, Dr. Zhang was trained in medicine, social science, and epidemiology. Since beginning her Master's of Public Health (MPH) program in Texas A&M Health Science Center, Dr. Zhang has participated in several NIH-funded projects focused on behavioral and biomedical interventions among vulnerable populations (e.g., female sex workers, children affected by AIDS, people living with HIV/AIDS, injected drug users, and men who have sex with men).

During her work on those projects, Dr. Zhang has developed both quantitative and qualitative data analytical skills, including content analysis, multi-level analysis, multivariate regression analysis, meta-analysis, mathematical modeling, and budget-impact analysis. By the time of gaining her PhD degree from Vanderbilt University, Dr. Zhang has more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Since Dr. Zhang began her work at School of Nursing, she became an active member in the UR Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) and School of Nursing's Interdisciplinary Sexual Health and HIV Research group (INSHHR). Under the mentorship of Drs. McMahon and Nelson, Dr. Zhang is working hard to promote the PrEP cascade (e.g., awareness, prescription, uptake, retention and adherence) among groups with high-risk of HIV infection in various settings (e.g., STI clinics, community-based organizations) across the U.S.

Dr. Zhang would like to expand her research agenda on biomedical and behavioral HIV prevention strategies among vulnerable populations in both U.S. and worldwide, with the following potential directions:

  1. Enhance HIV care continuum including HIV testing, linkage to ART care if positive, or linkage to PrEP care if negative, as well as retention and adherence to anti-retrovirus drugs.
  2. Reduce risk sexual behaviors by developing effective and tailored interventions for at-risk groups, while employing innovative and advanced methodologies (e.g., crowd-sourcing strategies, social-network analyses, and mHealth).
  3. Improve implementation science by translating research efficacy into general public health effectiveness.

Current Focus

"My current research focuses on behavioral and biomedical interventions (e.g., circumcision, pre-exposure prophylaxis) targeting high-risk populations (e.g., MSM, FSW, IDU, PLWHA) in the US and aboard. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., Discrete Choice Experiment, mathematical modeling), I am trying to develop and implement tailored interventions with high efficacy/effectiveness and cost-effectiveness employing appropriate frameworks (e.g., Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research, Intervention Mapping, Pragmatic Hybrid Trial designs)."
