Preceptor Profile: Karen Abbas
Karen Abbas, MS, RN, AOCN, RN-BC
Former Senior Nurse Educator, Wilmot Cancer Center
Former UR Nursing Preceptor
Karen Abbas has precepted with the UR School of Nursing for three years working primarily with Master’s in Nursing Education students. Her students help teach classes and with program development.
Here, she reflects on her experience:
What is your current role?
I coordinate the orientation for the cancer service as well as the oncology nurse residency program. I am the service regulatory representative. I work with safety nurses, pain champions, unit educators, and the unit regulatory champs. I also sit on many nursing and hospital wide committees and coordinate the Wilmot Cancer Institute nursing conference.
Why do you choose to precept?
I love inspiring the next generation and I learn a lot from them as well as it has been a while since I was in school – they have new ideas and fresh perspectives.
What advice would you give to clinicians or health care leaders who are considering precepting?
I think it is a great opportunity to contribute to the profession, to other’s professional growth, and to your own professional growth!
