Katherine Tarkulich

Why do you choose to precept?

I love watching professional growth of others. I find it completely wonderful watching students gain knowledge and insight. They also teach me! I learn new things or see things differently all the time from a student.

What advice would you give to clinicians or health care leaders who are considering precepting or new to the mentor role?

Have patience and compassion. Help and guide them to thought processes or decisions. Walk them through your process and "what if" scenarios. Also give appropriate feedback so they can continue their growth.

What advice would you give to students?

Again, be patient! I still learn new things and am always evolving in my role. That's what makes it exciting! Also don't beat yourself up. Always continue to be open to new ideas and learning.

Katherine Tarkulich precepts Clinical Nurse Leader and Leadership students at the School of Nursing. During the experience, her students typically perform projects or implementation of new practices at the Surgery Center, including guidelines for surgery or other evidence-based changes.
