Rachael Howe, BSN, PMH-BC, is an experienced nurse leader graduating from the Leadership in Health Care Systems program at the University of Rochester School of Nursing. With more than 15 years of experience in behavioral health and residential care, Rachael has built her career around compassionate service, mentorship, and a commitment to patient advocacy. This year, she was selected as the graduate speaker for the 2025 Graduation Ceremony.
Rachael began her nursing journey at Monroe Community College, earning her associate’s degree in 2018, and went on to complete her bachelor’s through UR Nursing’s RN to BS Online program in 2022. She continued to advance her education with the support of the SON Tuition Grant, which she utilized for both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Inspired by her intrinsic values of compassion, advocacy, and service, she was motivated to further her education, allowing her to grow as a leader and deepen her impact within the healthcare system.
“I started my career in direct care at a residential facility working with youth who had a psychiatric diagnosis. I enjoyed working with that population and caring for others. There was a large intrinsic value to me in caring for others. There wasn't a lot of opportunity for advancement within that scope without additional degrees. Those close to me would tell me frequently that I would make a good nurse. I followed their advice and can continue in the career of caring for others.”
Why did you choose the UR School of Nursing?
UR School of Nursing had excellent reviews. I never had a bad experience when working with other nursing students or faculty members. It was also helpful having the tuition benefits.
What have you enjoyed the most about your experience?
It's easy to get tunnel vision when you are working as a floor nurse. While instrumental in improving my skills and aiding in my personal and professional growth, I would like to highlight how it has broadened my viewpoint within the organization and healthcare system. I have developed relationships and professional connections that I might never had made before if not for this program.
Which faculty, staff, preceptors or other members of the School community have impacted you in your time here and why?
It's hard to pick just one person. Each semester I was awed by the passion and dedication of the faculty, staff, and preceptors to creating a safe learning environment and for their area of expertise. Even the classes I was not looking forward to, were enjoyable due to the culture and supportive environment.
What are you looking forward to most post-graduation?
Post-graduation will not be the end of projects or research for me. I will continue to work on implementation of my capstone project and other projects that I am involved in for my units and department. I have not ruled out continuing my education towards a doctorate, but I am looking forward to being able to spend some more time with my husband and our two kids.
