A New Order of Things

How UR Nursing shaped America's most in-demand job

UR Nursing was an early leader in the nurse practitioner movement. From the development of the acute care nurse practitioner role right here at Strong Memorial Hospital to founding Dean Loretta Ford’s national advocacy for recognition of NPs, the School of Nursing has been a home to many firsts. Today, the NP role is the most in-demand and fastest-growing job in the U.S. In this edition of Rochester Nursing, we detail how the School has shaped the NP profession, and how our NPs continue to advance health care delivery and champion health equity.

I served jails, nursing homes, and developed and ran an outpatient psycho-pharmacology clinic. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without my training at the School of Nursing, which provided me with the confidence and experience to be autonomous.

[UR Nursing faculty] really challenged you to think in different ways. It hurts your brain to do that, but it definitely made me a better practitioner, leader, and a better person.
