Description: In the project, we propose to recruit and train older adults with chronic health conditions from underserved and under-resourced communities in urban and suburban upstate Rochester, NY to actively participate in ongoing and new research projects with the University of Rochester. The specific aims of this project are to:

  1. Train community-dwelling older adults to become educated consumers of research and to partner as co-researchers with geriatric researchers at the University of Rochester.
  2. Develop participants’ health literacy around specific chronic illnesses to enable them to advocate for themselves and members of their community regarding these illnesses.
  3. Empower participants toward greater patient engagement and effective communication with their health professionals.
  4. Assess the process of patient researcher preparation and skill development, and sustainability for replication in other university communities in Western New York State.
