GNS 440 - Nursing Care of Patients Enrolled in Clinical Trials

Description:
In this course, students will be prepared to provide safe, ethical, and evidence-informed care to patients participating in clinical trials across a range of settings (e.g., acute care, ambulatory, and community) and populations (e.g., oncology, cardiology). Students will also apply principles of the clinical trials research process, including trial design, regulatory and ethical frameworks, protocol implementation, investigational product management, and the nurse’s role in patient advocacy, education, care delivery, and safety monitoring.
Emphasis is placed on interpreting and analyzing clinical trial protocols to identify nursing responsibilities, patient safety requirements, investigational product management considerations, and care delivery and coordination needs. Students will critically examine the nurse’s contribution at each stage of the trial lifecycle, including study initiation, protocol conduct, adverse event monitoring, and care transitions at trial completion. Foundational concepts include research ethics (Belmont Principles), Good Clinical Practice, shared decision-making, and cultural humility. Through case-based application and protocol-based exercises, this course prepares students for registered nursing roles in research-intensive environments.
