NLX 420 - Theory and Evidence Based Practice for Nurse Educators and Nurse Leaders

Description:
The science of teaching and learning in the health professions is broad and diverse. Theories of teaching and learning are drawn from psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics, representing diverse ways of understanding what knowledge is, and how we attain it. In this course, students will learn about a wide variety of theoretical perspectives and paradigms, including behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, social constructivism, and humanism. Students will learn how learning theories can inform effective instructional practices, and guide scholarship of teaching and learning. Effective instruction is guided by evidence, as well as theory. In this course, students will learn how to evaluate evidence by identifying a problem, conducting a focused search of the literature, evaluating evidence, synthesizing findings, and drawing meaningful conclusions. Students will learn to evaluate evidence using methods and frameworks for evidence-based practice. The course will also emphasize developing effective communication of theory and evidence. During the clinical practice experience, students will work with Master’s prepared preceptors to apply theory and evidence to guide clinical practice at the Master’s level.
