6 credits ( 3 didactic credits / 3 clinical credits )

Prerequisite:

NPG 410, NPG 451

Description:

This is the first of three clinical courses for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) students. In this course, students systematically explore evidence-based psychotherapy for specific disorders across the lifespan and build upon the student’s knowledge of human development, mental health assessment, psychopathology, biopsychosocial formulation, and professional standards.  Students learn to employ theory-driven therapy models to address clinical problems. Through the practicum experience, the integration of their curriculum content to date, feedback, and self-reflection, students develop the ability to enact the role of the PMHNP with increasing competency. Students utilize culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and person-centered approaches in their processes of assessment, differential diagnoses, psychoeducation, and treatment planning. Students examine the ethical, legal, public policy, advocacy, quality, safety, and interprofessional implications of providing advanced psychiatric mental health nursing care for diverse individuals in various health care settings. The importance of understanding one's emotional responses to others in establishing therapeutic relationships, professional boundaries, and clinician wellbeing is highlighted.
