NUR 354 - Nursing Leadership and Management of Care

Description:

The purpose of this course is to examine leadership and management principles necessary to safely, reliably and effectively coordinate and carry out patient and family centered care in complex healthcare organizations. The emphasis is on the leadership competencies necessary to assure a culture of safety and continuous quality improvement as members of an interdisciplinary team. Students are introduced to the fundamental principles of improvement science and utilize tools to identify clinical questions and design a test of change in their clinical areas. A field study component enables them to critically evaluate leadership role competencies.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze selected leadership theories and their application to practice, reflecting on own leadership potential.
  2. Describe the nature of change in a complex environment, including strategies for effective change.
  3. Identify strategies to promote inter- and intraprofessional team building, effective communication, conflict resolution and negotiation.
  4. Apply concepts of quality improvement and patient safety to identify clinical questions, plan improvement activities and outcomes to be monitored.
  5. Explore best practices in leadership and management to promote the delivery of quality care, nurse satisfaction and achievement of desired organizational outcomes.
  6. Apply legal, ethical and risk management principles in the analysis of hypothetical situations related to management of care.
  7. Evaluate the use of information technology to improve patient care outcomes and create a safe environment.
