NUR 545 - Research Using Existing Data

Prerequisite:

For PhD students: completion of first year PhD courses (NUR 505, 506, 507, 510, 511, 512, 555). NUR 513 is strongly recommended as a pre-requisite; if not completed before this course, it is required as a corequisite. For DNP students: completion of NUR510, NUR574, and NLX466. NUR512 is strongly recommended as a pre-requisite. Permission/review by course faculty regarding statistics background is required. Prospective enrollees must meet with the instructor BEFORE the start of the semester to discuss plans for accessing data.

Description:

The goal of the course is to learn to evaluate existing data, conduct data analysis using a large dataset, and understand issues in developing research programs using existing data. The topics and issues examined include sources and advantages and disadvantages of existing data, the process of obtaining data, appraisal and use of existing data, and conceptual, methodological, and statistical considerations. Statistical methods including multilevel modeling and analysis of complex survey data are also introduced.
