Description:
This course introduces the student to the field of qualitative research and covers foundational principles of qualitative research design with an emphasis on the appropriate use of methods. The philosophic foundations underlying the methodologic approaches are examined. The primary focus is on methods that are common to the design, conduct, and reporting of qualitative research across genres. Attention also is given to the different purposes and approaches of specific genres through readings and examples of work, such as qualitative/interpretive description, narrative and arts-informed studies, critical inquiry, participatory action research (PAR), and approaches to research within the traditions of ethnography, grounded theory, and phenomenology.
