NUR 556 - Advanced Qualitative Research Methods: Qualitative Description and Content Analysis

3 credits ( 3 didactic credits )

Prerequisite:
NUR 555 or equivalent Identified research project (or idea for a specific project), from which data can be accessed for practice analyses.

Description:

This course builds on prior coursework in or equivalent to NUR555, an overview and introduction to basic qualitative methods. This advanced course extends foundational knowledge by enabling learners to examine in depth qualitative descriptive design and the analytic technique of content analysis and apply these to their own practice-related research. Qualitative description is the most commonly used approach to qualitative research but has only recently been labeled and described. The origins and historical and philosophical placement of qualitative description are explored. Processes and strategies for research question development, data collection, and data analysis are examined and practiced. Specific technical issues related to the definition of the research problem, sample selection, data gathering, analysis, interpretation, and reporting are experienced by the learner through hands-on involvement in a student-defined research project.
