NUR 583 - Clinical Immersion: Innovation - Design Thinking

2 credits ( 2 clinical credits )

Description:

In this 2-credit doctoral immersion, students prepare to be an innovative leader by integrating design thinking principles with advanced clinical practice. Utilizing modules from designthinkingforhealth.org, the student will collaborate with patients, families, and interprofessional teams to identify and analyze complex healthcare problems impacting patient outcomes, staff well-being, and system performance. The student will apply the five stages of design thinking—empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test—using methods such as empathic inquiry, systems mapping, and iterative prototyping to develop a meaningful innovation within their own practice setting. The course's flexible structure allows the student to customize their immersion to their specific clinical context. A key component is reflective practice, in which the student will critically examine their growth and leadership development at each design thinking stage. This process helps the student identify strengths, navigate challenges, and build strategies for leading future innovation initiatives, ultimately enabling them to translate complex problems into actionable, human-centered solutions that enhance care quality, safety, and equity.
