The Nurse Practitioner Role at UR Nursing

Our founding dean, Dr. Loretta Ford, co-founded the nurse practitioner role more than 50 years ago, paving the way for advanced nursing education at Rochester. Dr. Ford changed the face of nursing, bringing greater respect and appreciation to the critical role of nurses and nurse practitioners and to the nursing profession as a whole. Ever since, UR nurses have paved the way for generations of nurses to follow.

Today, our nurse practitioner programs are ranked top in the country by U.S. News & World Report. We set the standard for nurse practitioners specializing in fields such as gerontology, pediatrics, and mental health. We were also first in the country to prepare advanced practice nurses as NPs in the acute care setting. It is this continued commitment to nursing excellence which prepares our graduates to provide the best care for patients and take the next step in their careers.
