Description:

In 2001, the Surgeon General, Dr. David Satcher, introduced a ‘Call to Action’ to promote sexual health and responsible sexual behavior. In 2002, the World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization also released ‘Recommendations for Action’ to promote sexual health. The strategies presented in these initiatives will provide a point of reference for advancing a dialogue on issues of sexuality, sexual health, and responsible sexual behavior. The goals of the course are intended to help students increase their knowledge of multiple aspects of sexuality and to improve their ability to promote sexual health among diverse populations. The content of this course is based on the strategies identified in the ‘calls to action’ that acknowledge the positive aspects of sexuality and science-based approaches to address a broad range of sexual health issues, including prevention of STIs and HIV/AIDS, unintended pregnancy, and science-based sex education. Topics include social and cultural foundations of human sexuality, cross-cultural perspectives on sexual behavior and contemporary society, gender roles and stereotyping, the effects of economics, class, and public policy on expression of human sexuality, and current and controversial issues in sex education. This online course will also give students the opportunity to enhance their skills related to the use of the Internet for accessing relevant information related to global, national, and local health needs as they apply to sexual health and health promotion/disease prevention for targeted populations.
