Academic Innovation

We remain committed to redefining and transforming nursing education by providing our students with active and experiential learning opportunities, collaborative tools, and educational technology proven to prepare them for success in their programs and careers.

Since our founding, the School of Nursing has been a pioneering force in the science and practice of nursing. Today, that spirit of innovation and excellence remains central to our mission to educate a highly diverse, competent, and adaptable nursing workforce.

Our world-class faculty and instructional designers are dedicated to optimizing innovation at every educational level, from developing evidence-based curricular goals and reinvigorating course delivery methods, to integrating more hands-on, active learning strategies that put our students at the center of their own learning experience.

The techniques and tools our students encounter in our physical and digital environments result in better understanding, greater retention and synthesis of information, and increased familiarity with technology, all of which are proven to promote critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and problem solving skills—and make our students better nurses.

“Here at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, we center academic innovation on the appreciation that learning occurs everywhere. The increasing complexity of health care environments requires that nurses maintain a lifelong commitment to learning to effectively respond to ever-changing health system demands. By leveraging active learning technologies and methodologies, we are not only ensuring our ability to deliver our curriculum in a highly individualized and flexible way, but also creating truly dynamic, experiential learning experiences that prepare our students for their futures in nursing.”

Incorporating the iPads in our curriculum has truly given value to experiential learning. Learning has become fun and more interactive because of the games, surveys and other activities we are able to do on the iPad. The iPads also create an enriching mock environment of clinical experiences that allow us to exercise and sharpen our fundamental nursing skills, which makes the material that much more comprehensive. I really feel more confident and equipped to begin my career.

“The iROC initiative focuses on providing students with a technological platform that enhances their learning experience. The provision of the iPads at the beginning of the school year facilitated my learning in so many different ways. My favorite experience was an online telemedicine simulation—it was so exciting to gain insight on this form of patient care.”
