School of Nursing Offers 24-Month Pathway for Accelerated Nursing Program The University of Rochester School of Nursing is now accepting applications for a new 24-month option in the Accelerated Bachelor’s Program for Non-Nurses. The degree pathway allows aspiring nurses to complete the program in six consecutive semesters to earn a second bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Blaakman Selected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing Susan Blaakman, a nationally certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and longtime faculty member at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, has been selected to join the American Academy of Nursing’s 2022 class of fellows. A professor of clinical nursing and specialty director of the family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program, Blaakman is among 250 distinguished nurse leaders representing 35 states and 17 countries chosen for the academy’s largest cohort to date.

UR Medicine Center for Employee Wellness Contracts with MVP Health on Corporate Wellness Programs The UR Medicine Center for Employee Wellness (CEW), created and run by the University of Rochester School of Nursing, recently signed a contract with MVP Health Care, the second largest insurer in the area allowing the CEW to offer wellness services to companies covered by MVP at no out-of-pocket expense to their employees.
CEW already has a payer relationship with Excellus and, since its creation, has demonstrated that its wellness programs are effective in improving health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing avoidable health care expenses due to illness and disease.

Marie Flannery to Direct UR Nursing PhD Program Marie Flannery, PhD, RN, has been named director of the University of Rochester School of Nursing’s PhD program, succeeding longtime director Bethel Powers, PhD, RN, FSAA, FGSA, who is retiring in July. “Assuming the position of director of the PhD program is an honor,” said Flannery.

UR Nursing Alumna Reflects on Career in Infection Prevention It may seem hard to believe that Ann Marie Pettis, ’81N, fell into a career in infection prevention. The director of ambulatory infection prevention at Highland Hospital, she is a fellow and president of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), and a founding member of the organization's local Finger Lakes chapter. She has been published in a variety of peer review and trade journals and has spoken extensively about infection prevention and control at local, state, national, and international venues over the past 35 years.

PhD Student Dillon Dzikowicz Honored with Edward Peck Curtis Award Dillon J. Dzikowicz, an instructor and PhD student at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, has been named a recipient of the University of Rochester Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate Student. UR School of Nursing Jumps into Top 25 in U.S. News Rankings The University of Rochester School of Nursing jumped to the Top 25 of the nation’s best master’s nursing programs, climbing five places to No. 21, according to the 2023 Best Graduate Schools guide produced by U.S. News and World Report. The UR School of Nursing also tied for 27th among Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs, its highest ranking since the category debuted in 2017, and up 17 places from the 2022 report.

UR School of Nursing Jumps to 23rd in Latest NIH Rankings The University of Rochester School of Nursing jumped six spots, landing at No. 23 in the annual ranking of research funding received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The UR School of Nursing has now ranked in the top 25 among all nursing schools five times in the past seven years, according to historical data compiled by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

UR School of Nursing, Medical Center Extend Free Tuition Program for Employees The University of Rochester School of Nursing, in partnership with nursing practice at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has extended a free tuition program for UR nurses for another two years. The UR School of Nursing Tuition Grant supplements UR employee tuition benefits to provide 100 percent tuition coverage in select bachelor’s, master’s, and post-master’s programs.

Professor Emerita Jean Johnson Passes Away Jean Johnson, a renowned nursing leader who contributed groundbreaking work on sharing information with patients to help them cope with illness, died Jan. 23. She was 96. A professor emerita at the University of Rochester School of Nursing, former associate director of nursing oncology at the University’s Cancer Center, and clinical chief of oncology nursing at Strong Memorial Hospital, she devoted her nearly 50-year career to nursing practice, education, research, and advocacy for research and professional practice.

Year in Review: Message from Dean Kathy Rideout The dawning of a new year is a time for hope and optimism, a clean slate from which we can start fresh. Although 2021 ended in much the same way it began, with cases spiking and our health care systems challenged to meet the needs of our communities, my sincerest wish is that sometime in 2022, we all can begin to find relief from the relentless threat of COVID-19 and return more fully to the lives we left before the pandemic. For the time being, we will continue to stay the course and remain optimistic about our future.
